Combined Heat and Power (CHP) is the most efficient way to make use of fuel and produce electricity. A gas or oil-fuelled CHP unit is typically 3–4 times more efficient than a standard boiler producing the same amount of heat. Much of this wasted heat can be recovered to produce hot water, meaning that these efficiencies can often justify the cost of installation alone. Combined heat and power units are designed so that they can be located close to where the heat is needed. Often they are sited beside conventional boilers, but units also exist, for example, in supermarkets or shops, which provide both heating and cooling by using heat pumps.
